How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

Diagram of the skin layer structure showing laser tattoo removal process, including epidermis, dermis, subdermis, hypodermis, lymphatic channel, and broken pigment, with laser targeting tattoo ink visible through the epidermis.

Pico laser technology targets the pigment (ink) particles trapped within the skin using ultra-short pulses of light energy. Each pulse breaks the ink into microscopic fragments that the body naturally clears through the lymphatic system.

The laser energy is delivered in trillionths of a second, meaning surrounding skin tissue remains unharmed. Over a series of treatments, the pigment continues to fade as your body removes the broken-down ink.

What to Expect During Your Laser Appointment?

Every treatment begins with a warm welcome and a friendly face. Every treatment is carried out with care. A consultation and test patch is required before starting treatment,

You have the option to use numbing cream before your appointment (highly reccomended). At your appointment, your skin is cleansed and a cool pack is placed on the treatment area. This helps to reduce discomfort and reduces heat damage to skin tissue. The laser then works across the tattoo in short, precise bursts breaking down the ink particles. Afterwards, a cool pack is reapplyed and a soothing product is applied and full aftercare guidance is given to protect and support healing.

SPMU & Cosmetic Pigment Removal

Laser tattoo removal isn’t just for body tattoos — it’s also highly effective for removing semi-permanent makeup (SPMU) such as brows or lip liner.Unlike traditional tattoo ink, cosmetic pigments sit closer to the skin’s surface and often break down faster under laser. That’s why many clients see immediate lightening or complete disappearance after the first session.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Most tattoos need between 6 and 12 sessions, spaced 6–8 weeks apart.
The number of sessions depends on factors like the ink colour, density, depth, and your skin’s response to treatment.

  • You’ll feel quick, hot flicks on the skin — similar to an elastic band snap or oil splash when cooking.
Treatments are short, and we can use cooling or numbing options to make it more comfortable. I strongly recommend numbing cream prior to treatment- pain is not beauty!
However, I’m sure we’re all aware everyone has a different pain tolerance. Some clients find it manageable and easier with time, others do not. You’ll likely know your pain tolerance best and you’ll know how you tolerate removal after your test patch.

  • Most can be fully removed or significantly faded. Some colours like green or yellow may take longer.

  • You’ll start to notice fading after the first few sessions, though every tattoo responds differently.
The body continues to flush away broken ink particles for several weeks after each treatment, so fading continues between sessions.

  • Absolutely. We can safely remove or fade microbladed eyebrows, lip blush, and other cosmetic tattoos. Many clients see results in just 1–2 sessions, though it varies depending on pigment type and depth.

  • Yes! Many clients choose to fade a tattoo to prepare for a cover-up. We’ll tailor the number of sessions to your goal and guide you through the process.
